The Golden Cage

PART I
THE RESTLESS PRICE AND
THE CONSPIRACY

Chapter 1: The Golden Cage

  Pov:Vivaan

The Ides of March. A day whispered in the dry halls of history as the day the sun stands still to crown a King. But to me, it felt like the day the sun would finally set on my freedom.

The air in the capital was thick, suffocatingly sweet with the scent of celebratory flowers. Beyond the palace walls, I could hear the roar of Arthavarta, a sea of joy and laughter that felt miles away from the silence. I was forced to wear armor.
People think I don’t speak because I am powerful but the truth is, I don’t speak because my words are all I have left that haven't been bought by the throne.

I stood tall, my lean, athletic build that is made from riding across jagged borders rather than sitting on velvet cushions was aching under the weight of my ceremonial robes.
I caught my reflection in the polished bronze. My face looked like it was carved from the very stone of this Sun Palace, very sharp, architectural and unyielding.

My deep hazel eyes are obsidian as if looking back at me like two infinite wells of secrets. In the direct sunlight, they held a golden fleck, but here in the moody shadows, they were just tired. They carried the weight of a destiny I hadn't asked for.
My dark, slightly wavy hair was pulled back in a traditional half-up style, but as always, a single stray lock fell over my forehead. A sign, perhaps, that the restless prince inside me refused to be completely tamed by a crown.

With a heavy heart, I walked toward the back of the grand courtyard to my sanctuary where the  ancient Gulmohar tree stood on the bank of the River Aaryaa, a symbol of love left behind by my late father, King Varam.

I sat beneath its crimson blossoms, watching the Aaryaa flow calmly toward the horizon, dividing our state from the rival fires of Vajnapuri.
A metallic tang of shifting power seemed to settle in my throat. Today, they would name me Jyotir-Samrat the Emperor of Light.

I leaned forward, the river-mist cooling my skin, and whispered a truth I could never say aloud to the court:

“Ek Samrat apni hadd jaanta hai,” I told the flowing water.
“Par ek musafir hadd par karna chahta hai.”
(An Emperor knows his boundaries... but a traveler wants to cross them.)

I closed my eyes, trying to memorize the sound of the water before the drums of the coronation drowned it out forever.
